A TOUCH OF THE ‘OLD LADY’ COMES TO YORKSHIRE

First it was the British Library that upped sticks to Yorkshire, now it’s the Bank of England – or at least a small part of it.An antiques warehouse based in Tockwith, between Wetherby and York, has bought around 20 Georgian style desks from the ‘Old Lady of Threadneedle Street’.

The desks, purchased at an auction at the bank, were snapped up by Tomlinsons, and are proving a hit with Americans wanting a piece of British banking history.

Ranging in price from £1,400 + VAT to £3,800 + VAT, depending on condition, all the desks come with a small inventory disc fixed underneath, originally for the Bank’s stocktaking process, but now acting as a method of verifying their authenticity.

Sarah Worrall, Tomlinsons’ Sales Director, said: “These are desks acquired direct from the Bank of England, and originate from 1928 when the ‘Old Lady’ rebuilt its offices in Threadneedle Street.

“They were designed to reflect an earlier period, constructed to exacting specifications, most often in the Georgian style. They are being snapped up rapidly by financiers due to their provenance, with many going to private American customers who are particularly keen on the official British connections.”
