New upholstery range rekindles true craftsmanship of bygone eras

The UK’s leading supplier of antique furniture, Tomlinsons, has launched a new bespoke upholstery range that is produced entirely by hand using techniques and natural materials of bygone eras.

The range has been conceived with the highest quality in mind and includes authentic designs from the Georgian and Victorian periods, harking back to a time when Britain was synonymous with true craftsmanship.

Each sofa is hand-built and tailored to individual needs using only the finest natural materials such as horsehair and duck down.
The sofa frames are made from kiln-dried hardwoods such as beech, unlike inexpensive sofas that are often made from softer pine lumber that doesn't have the same lifespan. Traditional construction methods entailing glue, screws and dowelled joints ensure the frames are guaranteed for 15 years.
Once the frame is finished, individual springs are hand-sewn in place using natural products. Horsehair, covered in thick grade tarp provides the bulk and shape of the sofa, followed by cotton wadding.
The cushion base and back are filled with an opulent blend of 80% duck down and 20% duck feather to provide that comfortable 'give' as you sit down.
Lastly there is a wide choice of coverings in sumptuous fabrics woven in northern Italy, soft leathers and wonderful durable fabrics from the US.
Such quality craftsmanship will ensure that properly cared for the springs could last for 50 years.
Within the range there is an option of two-seater, two-and-a-half seater or three-seater sofas, matching chairs, and there is also a choice of hand turned legs and castors.
Tomlinsons’ Sales Director Sarah Worrall, says that such quality of upholstery is rarely available through retail outlets as it requires minute attention to detail, and is highly labour intensive.

She added: “This upholstery range is possibly the most exciting addition to our fine furniture collection for many years. By focussing on true craftsmanship I feel we have created a perfect blend of tradition and luxury, that offers high-quality ‘period build’ furniture which is not only tailored to your needs but is also available at affordable prices.”

  • Prices range from £2195 inc VAT, to £2995 inc VAT. Further details are available from the press office (see below).
