ANOTHER CABINET THAT HARBOURS SECRETS
Rare 17th century antique masterpiece goes on sale at
Yorkshire antique dealer
Ministers have come and gone over scandals many times since Tomlinsons Antiques’ latest find was made when William III and Mary II ruled the country.
A rare and valuable marquetry cabinet that dates back to around 1690 has just gone on sale at the leading furniture dealer situated between Wetherby and York. For antiques enthusiasts, its secrets are as gripping and complex as any political intrigue from the centuries since then.
According to experts at Tomlinsons, the English-made cabinet is a ‘tour de force’ in the art of marquetry (painting with wood and making intricate designs by cutting and fitting the pieces together) and comes complete with hidden draws and compartments.
The door panels of the cabinet are beautifully inlaid with sections of foliate and floral design depicting flowers such as carnations and tulips. This is further enhanced with a border of inlaid overlapping leaf design.
The intricate design, however, is not just restricted to the exterior –opening the doors reveals a breathtaking sight with every surface covered in a different floral motif and bordered by the same complex leaf design.
The central cupboard opens to reveal three further internal drawers with matching marquetry and one of the larger internal drawers conceals two secret compartments.
Sarah Worrall sales director at Tomlinsons says: “This is a rarely found piece of furniture that has been enjoyed and admired for generations and we are very excited to be able to offer it our customers. We expect to see a lot of interest in this cabinet – it’s not every day you come across such an elaborate item of furniture in such good condition!”
The cabinet is priced at £27,025 including VAT.
